Seattle E-Bike - IT'S BAAAAACK!!!!


Almost 7 years ago, this sign was installed at Seattle E-Bike's first location at the corner of Main and 1st Ave South in Pioneer Square. We grew, and moved to 570 1st Ave South, the sign did as well.  Unfortunately, that is when the vandalism started. One well-thrown pebble disables 25% of the sign and costs $700 to repair. We thought about encasing it in Lucite but it would have reduced the impact. I spent thousands trying to keep up but it was hopeless - until now.

Now we are at our truly grand store at 220 South Jackson Street. The Pioneer Square Preservation District Board will not let us erect the sign outside, for which I now thank them. It is mounted in the store, visible out each side, and 10 feet from my desk. I replaced the neon, feeling this beautiful sign now has a safe home visible to all but safe inside.

One of our customers blew up a photo to poster size and has it over their bed. You can't buy that kind of publicity!

We're now thinking of making our own posters. If you would like one, let me know. They will be 24" by 36" and will probably cost about $25. If we get a hundred takers. Or you can just stop by, and do a selfie!

Bike of the Week and Screaming Deal of the Week!

Yes, yes, we missed last week, the second week of this undertaking.  Well, stuff happens.  We are summer time busy, and Alex our assistant manager and lead sales person, broke his collarbone in not one, but two places.  Ouch!  Alex is on injured reserve, please send out a good thought for him.  I don't know why he picked a fight with Mike Tyson.  If you are an ortho surgeon, and have some slots sooner than ten days from now, please call me immediately.  Our service techs can provide the pins.  So Ryan, who makes these blogs pretty, is spending most of his time covering the sales floor.  So we blew it.  You probably do not care, but I do.  This is going to be a regular feature.  But also, the one week wait was worth it, because, at long last, the bike of the week is, drum roll please...

BIKE OF THE WEEK

The Stromer ST5.  Development and production take a long time.  I rode an ST5 prototype at Eurobike 2017, more than a year ago.  The new top of the Stromer line is worth the wait, though.  It has a larger, 27.5 inch wheels, which I think is ideal, especially since the power has been increased.  Read more at https://www.stromerbike.com/en_INT/e-bikes/st5.html.  Every possible bell and whistle, you will note that the claimed rating is 850 watts, with the U.S rating "TBD."  Worry not, Stromer has always been, how shall we say it, extremely conservative with its ratings.  The ST5 will be wicked quick.  Stromer bikes are not light, but they handle. We have always referred to the ST2S as the Mercedes S-Class AMG of E-Bikes.  The ST-5 is the S-Class AMG 12 litre biturbo of E-Bikes. Only two less wheels, for $211,000 less, and it will blow the doors of the AMG every time in Seattle rush hour traffic.

At 4 a.m. Saturday morning, I finally received confirmation that the first two should be at Seattle E-Bike this week.  One is spoken for, the other will be a short terms demo until we can no longer fight people off. # more come about September 14.  Our order was not completely ready when the truck showed up, so they are flying 3 to us at their expense.

There is a way you can know exactly when you will get your ST5.  The ST5 is $10,000, and it is pre-selling like popcorn.  Stromer has a deal with an air freight company.  You can buy one from us, and they will put it on the plane in Zurich for $300, which is about $800 less than typical, and less than one third of what the State of Washington will charge you, just for the privilege of buying it.  

Supplies are limited for that offer, but our operators are standing by.

SCREAMING DEAL OF THE WEEK

FYI, our last Screamer were the Emazings, we have since the markdown, sold 5.  Thank you for recognizing a Screaming Deal when you see one.  We have a few more, though.

This week are the Besv bikes.  Our Besv’s come with 20” wheels, the PS-1, and 28” wheels, the LX-1.  I think they are gorgeous, see below, and they have a cantilevered seat that soaks up the bumps.  But they are not quick, and market acceptance has been mediocre to poor. So the $3999 LX-1 is now a Screaming Deal at $1799, more than 50 percent off, and the $1999 PS-1 is now $999.  We do not have many, so come on down.

At Seattle E-Bike, innovation is our middle name!

Leave your bike with us for 3 to five days (the battery process requires patience) and you will get a report on your system, telling you what is wrong, what it would cost to repair and replace, or possibly, telling you it is your imagination and you have wasted $40.  (Our rates for telling you why you are imagining things are $275 per hour, with absolutely no estimate on the number of hours required, it could take years).

European Bikes at Seattle E-Bike

The reason you can find wonderful European Bikes at Seattle E-Bike is because, since I started the store 6 years ago, I have flown each year to Eurobike, in Freiderichshavn Germany.  It is, by a factor of three, the largest bike and E-Bike show in the world.

In 2012, there were probably 10 E-Bike Brands at Eurobike taking up 2 percent of the show. This year, year 6 for me, there were at least 100 E-bike brands, the models taking up 15 percent or so of the space at the show, at least half of much more space as non assisted bikes.  (Over half the space is highly specialized, like rows of booths just offering pedals.)

This year Stockholm, and Gdansk.  Previous years Amsterdam, Berlin, London, Paris, Brussels, Brugge, Munich, Zurich, and various cities in France and Italy.  Every year, I see that the Urban Core of the Norther European cities are becoming increasingly dominated by bicycles.  In Amsterdam, more people own at least one bicycle (many own 4 or 5). More own bikes instead of owning a car.  The Dutch are the leaders, in boat building and bike usage.

Here in Stockholm I rented a bike (non electric) because one look at the density and size of central Stockholm told me that it was the best way to travel.  Riding around all day confirmed it.  I must have seen 100,000 bikes, and between the bike paths and their general presence everywhere, they are respected by motorists and I felt safe even with an oh so slow, 20 inch heavy, 3 speed rental.  But boy, did I wish I had an E-Bike.  There is a reason E-Bike's are taking over Eurobike.

 


Seattle is ahead of most of the U.S. in bike use, but hopelessly behind Northern Europe.   

Given the  our ethos....green is good, its great to be outdoors, a little drizzle won't hurt you, and working your body is a virtue.... there can be only one reason bikes are not more prevalent in our traffic choked city.

Our hills!  Yes, our hills! 
Kansas is mountainous compared to the Netherlands.   The highest spot a Dutch person has to reach is 18 feet above sea level. Stockholm has grades, but not grades we would find noticeable.  London, Berlin, Brugge, Brussels, are all extremely flat.


If you want to comfortably and frequently, ride up Cherry Street, or Queen Anne Ave, or Stone Way, or climb over Beacon to Rainier, or make the run out on Madison to the Lake, or 35th West in West Seattle,  which has 33 times as much vertical that the entire country of the Netherlands, you have your work cut our for you.

Two must have links with great information for commuters

Gravity being immutable, you have two choices, if you want to really enjoy riding in Seattle, you can either work out hard an hour a day until you are 40, 2 hours a day until you are 60, and then three hours a day after that.   Or.....you can flatten our hills through the miracle of lithium powered electrical assist.  Still riding as hard as you wish, but going where you want, as far as you want and at speeds 50% to 200% faster, depending on the terrain.

Let's face facts,  if we are going to get more of our aging butts back on bikes,  and take back the City,  you need an E-Bike. 

Unless you are the athlete referenced above,  you owe it to yourself and our City to find something that will get your butt back on a bike.  Everyday, everywhere.   Leave the car at home, maybe even sell it.  Better it is parked at home than crawling at 2 mph downtown.

Batman Bikeboard Private Reveal!

Don't miss out on the redesigned Conway Bikeboard's! Four companies competed against each other by building their own model with the Conway Bikeboard. Last weekend, all four companies presented their new designs with a private Grand Reveal in Spanaway, Washington at the Puget Sound Go Kart Association. After the private Grand Reveal, the four designs competed against each other in three challenges. The three challenges were unknown to everyone until the reveal. 

Challenge #1: Agility:Each team had to ride down a 30-yard stretch of the track. The challenge though, was that every 10-yards, the team had to weave in and out of cones. For every cone that the team avoided the team earned 1 point and any cones knocked down deducted team points.
After each team weaved their way through the tricky cones, one winner stood. The Conway Bikeboard team.

Challenge #1 Results: Conway- 20 points, Seattle E-Bike-0, Garage Asylum-0, Huff Motorsports-0

Challenge #2: Short Distance Speed Race with an awkward item attached to the rider. The fastest team down the 30-yard straight shot would win 20 points. Each team had to draw a card and that card coordinated with a prop they needed to attach to their bike. Garage Asylum ended up with large, stuffed soccer balls. Huff sports had to drag a parachute. Conway Bikeboards had to tow a two-wheeled skateboard with an additional weight on top. Seattle E-Bike had to wear a purple kids backpack. With all the objects in tow, each bike raced down the 30-yard straight shot. Riding furiously forward. The first to fall victim to their towable item was the Conway Bikeboard team; the weight fell off of their skateboard and therefore disqualified them. The rest of the bikes continued on and the purple kids backpack passed the finish line first.

Challenge #2 Results: Seattle E-Bike- 20 points. Conway Bikeboards- 20 points. Garage Asylum- 0 points. Huff Motorsports- 0 points. 

Challenge #3: A Race Around the Go Kart Track. The teams had to race around the entire Puget Sound Go Kart Association track twice. However it is a lot easier said than done. The track had some hills and sharp twists and turns that provided a challenge for all the racers. The race was well-fought and quite entertaining to watch. Each team did great! At the end of the two laps, the rankings were as follows.

Challenge #3 Results: Seattle E-Bike- 40 points. Conway Bikeboards- 20 points. Garage Asylum- 0 points. Huff Motorsports- 0 points.

The Seattle E-Bike team is in the lead with just one Challenge of the Conway Bikeboard Build Off Challenge left and it requires all of your support! 

Challenge #4 Best Bikeboard Build: All the teams of the Conway Bikeboard Build Off Challenge will be revealing them privately at the Pioneer Square First Thursday Art Walk tonight! The next time you can catch all the bikes will be at the Waterline Festival-Wheels and Keels-Car, Motorcycle, Wooden Boat Festival at Des Moines Marina July 24, 2016! Come out to see all the awesome bikes that the teams have built and vote on your favorite bike! The team with the most votes will earn 50 points. At this point in the competition, anyone could win it!

E-Dog in the Great Seattle E-Bike Fire

 

Notice Thorssen is shown tethered to a plug.  That is serendipity not cleverness.  So many of us take him for a walk, the leash sometimes gets lost.  The cord you see is a temporary replacement.  But it truly does make Thorssen the e-dog of Seattle E-Bike.
Last Wednesday, May 20, at about 3:10 PM, a fire ignited in Seattle E-Bike.   The fire initially started near the rack where we keep all of our bicycle clothing. Of course, clothing is synthetic which means once flash point is reached, you can say it acts like solid napalm on a candy stick.  POOF!!!  We are thankful that the sprinkler system reinforced by five Seattle fire trucks and 30 brave firemen and women doing their job making the fire damage very minimal. However, between the smoke and roughly 10-20,000 gallons of water, we unfortunately have some major renovating to do and a large chunk of our inventory to replace, none of which was immediately on our minds. 

While we were thankful no human was hurt, the owner's dog disappeared.  Thorssen is the store mascot and amazingly sweet, social, Norwegian elk hound.  He loves meeting all of the customers that enter the shop as he sits behind the bikes with his whitish-gray fur blending in with the cement wall. It is very possible that this chipper dog has facilitated many store sales with his happy, tail-wagging welcome.  Thorssen is our official “Store Greeter.”  

We watched from behind the fire line and yet there was still no sign of Thorssen.  So beloved is Thorssen that our Chief Tech, Ben, and a noble customer, ran back into the burning store to look for him while our Senior Sales Manager, Mikaela, roamed the streets via ebike searching for him before she left for her vacation.  Then it was the firefighters turn.  In they rushed.  Then, out they came and asked us where Thorssen liked to hide.  They emerged a final time to tell us that 8 of them had spent 20 minutes just looking for Thorssen and they were sure he had escaped the flames and smoke.  

Thorssen is not good in Downtown traffic and so our fears then turned to the possibility that he had escaped death by smoke inhalation only to be run down by a truck.  About 80 minutes after the fire started (it felt like a week), we received a call from a vet who had scanned Thorssen's subcutaneous chip and got the owner's phone number.  The moral of the first part of this story is:  CHIP YOUR PETS!!!  If you buy a bike from Seattle E-Bike and you have an unchipped pet, we will pay a vet to chip it.

Back to the store. After a whole week, we have completely emptied our store in preparation to have our flooring redone due to water getting through.  Most of the bikes will again be perfect, so perfect that we are adding a year to each bike's warranty that did not have any water exposure. The warranty stays the same for those that were. Because the bikes that have been exposed to smoke and a few of them to water, we cannot sell the electric bikes "as new."  Therefore, we will be discounting them.  We are in the process of ordering new bikes, about 20 different lines, about 70 (including the neatest electric scooter ever) are already on their way.

Hello fellow Bike enthusiasts! Spokes Man here; happy to share my thoughts on the e-bike world.

I have been fortunate to be a part of the e-bike business for a number of years, and watched it grow dramatically. So wanted to open this blog with a little bit about how its grown...and how it hasn't (ie who's scared to make the jump).

The baby boomers were the first to take it up, as they realized they were no longer saddling up old faithful in the garage, and wanted to be motivated to get out there again - to pedal up steep hills once more, to zoom along sun-dappled roads, to move through the air upon he earth, to feel the wind upon ones face...ahh yes.

Then came some truly venerable people. Ages 67, 75, 83. People with the wisdom and appreciation to be transported and once again be able to glide through nature. I know a 67 year old couple that takes their boat to San Juan Island, takes out their two small 20 inch folding bikes, and proceeds to circumnavigate the 52 miles, including 15 stunning miles along the windblown Straits of Juan de Fuca, looking across 18 miles of water to Port Townsend, and behind it, to the Olympics. Then, up the West side, overlooking Haro Straight to the Canadian Gulf Islands and up to Victoria (can you tell I've joined them a time or two? Epic doesn't even begin to describe the sites and feel of this ride). Lots of up and down, the whole trip has more than 1000 vertical feet. Their little bikes are only supposed to go about 30 miles without a charge, but they always ride hard, conserve energy, and are able to go the distance no problem. It's great to be connected with Seattle e-Bike customers like these ones.

The e-bike "Paradigm Shift" challenge is those who are simply too cool for school. So a brief message to our young commuters and cycling purists: Take an 8 mile commute from Greenlake to Downtown or West Seattle to Capitol Hill. 20-30 year old commuters are supposed to be in a hurry, but they chug along on their pure bikes at 12 miles per hour or less, while our 60 year olds buzz by them at 24. Maybe they don’t realize that an e-bike's not your mothers bike. You can pedal as hard and go as fast as you want. Or, you can chill, relax the pedals and concentrate on the the flowers and the Buicks (that you leave in the dust during traffic:), or expend moderate calories and get to work fresh , dry, and in good time. Its all good.

If you are a person who would never miss an opportunity to climb miss Queen Anne Avenue to the top on your way to Freemont, (instead of skulking along on Dexter or Westlake), or if you pedal a 100 cadence at 24 mph up 10 percent slopes like Queen Anne, or 12% slopes like Madison, then by all means skip the extra 13 pounds, the motor and battery adds, and good luck in the Olympics. But young urban warriors who want to do a six mile commute in 15 minutes while getting precisely the exercise they want, have evolved, and know that one is no longer personally defined by what toys one has, but rather by what those toys do, in this case: liberates. What comes is the freedom to select a bike that can do all sorts of things you could not possibly do without hybridization. They have been released from the toil of walking their bike up Virginia, are now free to buy a fine, climbing macine.

After all, bikes move you through the world in the finest of ways and the finest choice is unlikely to harm your community position, and, who knows, you might be in the vanguard when E-Bikes get truly cool, and then you will have it all.

Meet the Seattle E-Bike Mascots (WOOF!)

This may seem silly to some of you, but to us we find much joy during our busy days with these furry co-workers of ours and we found it appropriate to introduce them to you:

 

MEET THORSSEN: 

Our Chief Canine is THORSSEN, Senior Mascot of Seattle E-Bike. Thorssen is a Norwegian Elkhound.  "Elk" is actually "Elg" in Norwegian and that means moose.  Like Bullwinkle, but without the personality and not a cartoon. Thorssen ancestors used to help the Vikings hunt Moose. However, this is the 21st Century, and so he works at an E-Bike store. Thorssen weighs 38 pounds, is 2.5 years old, and believes the key to his success as a mascot is making sure he sleeps at the store at least 3 hours a day. He finds that the ultimate customer service experience is greeting every customer that comes into the store, though sometimes he is just too tuckered out after long meetings with his assistant that you might find him blended in with the cement walls in the shop snoozing. His favorite bike is the Focus Thron. We think it is because he likes the name.  He actually has difficulty riding, since without oppose-able thumbs, he can't shift or brake.  

 

MEET PAOLO:

PAOLO is the newest addition to the Seattle E-Bike squad as the new Assistant Mascot to THORSSEN. He was rescued from Southern California after his mother shortly gave birth to him and his brothers and sisters. He has a slightly floppy right ear, curly long tail with brindle paws. Though Paolo is indeed a mystery as to what breeds he has, he definitely has a little Chow, Australian Kelpie and Shepard. He is one humble dog! He'll let you play with his toys, take his treats, and even pick him up. In fact, he still tends to consider himself a lap dog and will pleasantly sit on your lap if you allow him to. Don't let his mellow phys-ad fool you, he has plenty of character when it comes to play time! He loves to wrestle other dogs when they are willing but shies away when barked at. He especially loves playing with his older colleague Thorsson as they tend to find themselves intensely collaborating with intertwined wrestling matches. Even though Paolo is 5 months young, he is a quick learner and a great asset to the team! 

We welcome animals in our shop since we are all lovers of them (as long as they pass the inspection of our fellow furry employees of course) and encourage folks to bring in their pet while checking out e-bikes!

New Polaris eBikes have arrived!

We are delighted with the new product line Polaris has debuted for 2015. They have not only incorporated regenerative braking/coasting, but these rides are FAST! Not mention a big thumbs up on their design! We are always appreciative of batteries being built into the frames without losing the rigidity of the bike and stylish appeal. We find them to really be the superior bike for the coming 2015 year and are thrilled to announce their arrival at last. The Fat Bikes are especially good looking with a rugged but functional ride for everyday use as well. Most importantly, they have really listened and took a major leap in their new product line compared to their last in terms of overall performance, with some of their models reaching speeds of 25+ MPH!

Our extensive Fat Bike Line-Up

Fat e-Bikes, is there anything they can't do? Anywhere they can't go?

Well, yes:

1. The Moon (although they would work great once they got there)

2. Certain other obscure locations in the Galaxy

BUT, that being said, when it comes to tackling sand dunes on the beach, shredding in snow up to 10" deep, or traversing cross country ski trails (fat e-bikes are legal there); handling swamps, mud, cobblestone streets, crossing railroad tracks and curbs at any angle, or climbing 35 degree slopes, the Fat E-Bike is up to the challenge, and for the true adventurer, your go-anywhere machine.

Seattle E-Bike brought the first Fat Bikes to the area, quickly followed by the first E-Fats ( E-Monster). Then we worked with Polaris on their Fat E-bike (the Sabre). Now we manufacture our own (Kulshan), selecting top of the line motors installed in shop and available as both hub motors and center drives. And for the cycle purist we also make a Carbon Fat: at 29 lbs (we can get to 27) which lets you pedal unassisted and fly through the air on single trails and downhills.

As more and more people experience the joy of riding a Fat E-bike, snow is fast becoming one of the greatest places to ride.
